Families with kids 13+ needing homework help, creative writing support, and learning conversations with proper supervision

ChatGPT Overview

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational AI assistant that helps with writing, learning, creative projects, and problem-solving through natural dialogue. The free tier is surprisingly capable for families.

Since February 2026, all users run on the GPT-5.2 model family (GPT-4o was retired). Free users get GPT-5.2 Instant with roughly 10 messages every 5 hours before falling back to GPT-5.2 Mini. There is also a new Go tier at $8/month that sits between Free and Plus, though it includes ads.

OpenAI's parental controls (launched September 2025) let parents link accounts with teens, set quiet hours, disable features, and receive safety alerts. A new age prediction system rolled out in January 2026 automatically detects likely under-18 users and applies content restrictions, even without parental setup.

Parents should be aware that OpenAI now shows ads on the Free and Go tiers. Conversations are not shared with advertisers according to OpenAI, but it is worth knowing about. Plus ($20/month) and above remain ad-free.

Safety

Account required (13+, parental consent for 13-17). Training on by default, opt out via Data Controls. 30-day retention for safety. Ads on Free/Go tiers, conversations not shared with advertisers per OpenAI.

Parental Controls
Comprehensive controls available: link parent/teen accounts, set quiet hours, disable features (memory, voice, image generation, model training), receive safety alerts. Age prediction system auto-detects likely teens and applies restrictions.

Enhanced safety for detected under-18 accounts: reduced sensitive content, blocked romantic roleplay, additional guardrails. Age prediction system applies teen-safe defaults automatically. Filters are improved but not foolproof.

Key Features

  • GPT-5.2 on the free tier gives families access to a highly capable AI model at no cost. Ask homework questions, get step-by-step explanations, brainstorm story ideas, or practice conversation skills. Falls back to a lighter model after roughly 10 messages per 5 hours.

  • Parental controls and age prediction work together to keep teens safer. Parents can link accounts, set quiet hours, disable features like memory or image generation, and get safety alerts. The age prediction system automatically applies teen-safe defaults even without parent setup.

  • DALL-E image generation, voice chat, Canvas writing tools, and scheduled Tasks are all available on the free tier. Kids can create illustrations for school projects, have spoken conversations for language practice, and set reminders for study sessions.

  • New Go tier at $8/month removes the message caps that make the free tier frustrating during homework-heavy periods. It includes ads but gives unlimited GPT-5.2 Instant access, making it a reasonable step up for families who use ChatGPT daily.

Family Projects

  • Getting step-by-step homework explanations where ChatGPT teaches the concept behind problems rather than just giving answers. My 8-year-old asked it to explain fractions three different ways until one clicked, something that would test any parent's patience.

  • Creating interactive study sessions where kids upload their notes and ChatGPT generates practice questions, explains wrong answers, and adapts difficulty. The Tasks feature can schedule daily quiz reminders before exams.

  • Brainstorming creative writing stories together using Canvas, with ChatGPT helping develop characters, plot ideas, and dialogue while the child makes all creative decisions and edits in real time.

  • Practising conversation skills using voice mode for mock interviews, debate practice, or foreign language conversation. Free tier gives about 15 minutes per day of standard voice, which is enough for a solid practice session.

  • Learning AI literacy together by exploring how ChatGPT works, its limitations, and when to fact-check its responses. This is arguably the most important skill, as kids will be using AI tools throughout their education.
