๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Turned a history lesson into a 10-minute podcast my 8-year-old actually enjoyed

Hi folks,
โ€‹
Apologies for not sending the regular weekend update yesterday. Got back from Tenerife late last night after a great week where we deliberately unplugged. Beach days. Family time. Zero screens beyond the occasional photo.

โ€‹
But before we left, I finished a new family project I want to share using the amazing NotebookLM from Google where I turned the Irish Famine into a custom educational podcast for Mateo (8) with excellent results!

The Set-up

On New Year's Day, we walked past Famine memorial statues on Dublin's docks. Mateo asked questions I couldn't fully answer.

Rather than lecture him or hand him a textbook, I used NotebookLM to create a 10-minute podcast conversation between two hosts - designed specifically for an 8-year-old audience.

โ€‹

What I Did

  1. Found age-appropriate sources (Britannica Kids, National Famine Way education pack)
  2. Uploaded them to NotebookLM
  3. Ran 3 verification prompts to check for contradictions and gaps
  4. Prompted it to create a podcast with clear definitions and 5 quiz questions at the end
  5. Let Mateo listen

โ€‹

Time to create: 30 minutes
โ€‹Cost: ยฃ0 (free)
โ€‹Result: He answered all 5 questions correctly. Asked to learn about the Irish War of Independence next.

โ€‹

Why This Works

NotebookLM isn't just for adults researching topics. It's incredible for creating personalized, age-appropriate educational content for kids.

The conversational podcast format kept him engaged far longer than reading would have. He actually learned something - and wanted more.

โ€‹

The guide covers:

  • Finding age-appropriate sources
  • My 3-step source verification process (this is criticalโ€”don't skip it)
  • Exact prompts I used
  • Settings to customize for different ages
  • Interactive mode where kids can interrupt and ask questions
  • Alternative formats: flashcards, mind maps, infographics, video overviews

P.S. Sometimes the best family time means stepping away from screens. But when you need AI for learning? NotebookLM is the tool I keep coming back to. The source verification process alone makes it worth the 30-minute setup.

See you on Sunday,
