• Claude is 18+ because Anthropic built it for adults, not because it is uniquely dangerous
  • The real reasons: children's data law (COPPA), no content filtering for minors, adult training data, no parental controls, and liability
  • Enforcement is weak: signup only asks for a date of birth, with no real age verification
  • Kids can use Claude with a parent (supervised use), just not on their own account
  • Read 18+ as 'designed for adults, supervise accordingly,' not 'dangerous, keep away'

If you have wondered "why is Claude 18+" when it looks so helpful and harmless, you are asking exactly the right question, and the answer is more reassuring and more important than it first seems.

I use Claude daily and with my 8-year-old most weeks, and I went through the signup myself to see what the age rule actually does. Spoiler: less than you would hope.

In this guide I will explain the real reasons Anthropic made Claude adults-only, how the 18+ rule is (barely) enforced, whether your child can use it anyway, and what the rule really means for you as a parent.

The short answer: it is a safety and legal line, not a verdict on danger

Anthropic's terms are blunt about it. "You must be at least 18 years old to use the Services." That is the rule for Claude, the same as ChatGPT and most major chatbots.

Here is the part that trips parents up. The 18+ rule does not mean Anthropic thinks Claude will harm your child. It means Anthropic has chosen not to build the things a product needs before it can responsibly invite children in. Those are different statements, and the difference is the whole point of this post.

The real reasons Claude is 18+

Across a year of using it and reading Anthropic's own safety documentation, the 18+ line comes down to five things.

Children's data law (COPPA). In the US, collecting data from under-13s triggers strict legal requirements around consent and handling. Claude is not built with that infrastructure, so the cleanest path is to say adults only.

No content filtering for minors. Claude's safety model assumes an adult who can handle history, violence, mental health, and mature themes in context. There is no separate setting that makes its defaults child-appropriate.

Adult training data. Claude has read everything from medical texts to adult fiction. The guardrails stop misuse, they do not turn adult knowledge into kid knowledge.

No parental controls. There is no dashboard to limit topics, set time limits, or review what your child typed. Without those, supervising a child's solo use is impossible by design.

Liability. An adults-only term of service is also legal cover. If something goes wrong with an under-18 user, the company is outside the agreement it set.

Put together, that is a fair and honest policy. Building an AI that is genuinely safe for children is a huge job, and Anthropic has decided not to claim it has done that job. The same logic applies across the big chatbots, which is why we keep a wider guide to whether AI is safe for kids by age.

How does Claude know if you are under 18?

Honestly? It mostly does not. When my son asked for his own account, I went through the signup with him to see exactly what it checks. It asks for a date of birth. That is it. There is no ID upload, no real verification, nothing stopping a 12-year-old from typing a fake year.

So the 18+ rule is enforced on trust, not technology. That matters for two reasons. First, the responsibility lands on you, the parent, not on a system that will catch a child. Second, the fact that a child could click through is exactly why the rule exists, not a loophole that makes it fine. The one group Anthropic has built a proper path for is teachers: Claude is now free for verified US K-12 teachers, precisely because that keeps the AI with a supervising adult.

🔒 Safety Note: If your child has already made an account with a fake birth year, they are using Claude outside its terms with none of the protections an adult agreed to. Delete it and use your account together instead.

So can my kid use Claude under 18?

In practice, with you, yes. Anthropic calls it supervised use: you are the account holder, your child is beside you, and you are using Claude together for a specific task. That is completely different from handing a 10-year-old your phone and walking off.

I have laid out exactly what I would allow at each stage, from under-13 to 17, in a separate guide: how old you have to be to use Claude. The one-line version is that the younger they are, the more you drive.

Is 18+ just legal cover, or is Claude actually risky for kids?

A bit of both, and it is worth being precise. Claude is not lurking to show your child something terrible. In a year of supervised use it has been the calmest, most careful chatbot I have tested.

But the adult defaults are real. I once asked Claude, as a test, to explain a mature news topic, and it answered the way you would explain it to an adult: accurate, unflinching, not graphic, but not softened for a 6-year-old either. With me reading first, fine. With a young child alone, that is the kind of moment the 18+ rule is quietly protecting against.

💡 Parent Insight: Read 18+ as "designed for adults, supervise accordingly," not as "dangerous, keep away." That framing tells you exactly what your job is: be the filter the product does not have.

What this means for you as a parent

Three practical takeaways.

Do not rely on the age gate. It will not stop your child. Your supervision is the actual control.

Use your own account. It keeps your child inside the agreement an adult signed, and it keeps the history and settings in your hands.

Pick the right tool for the job. If you want a chatbot the child can use more independently, a general-purpose AI is the wrong category. Kids-specific tools like Synthesis Tutor, or a gentler kids version of ChatGPT, exist precisely because Claude and ChatGPT chose the adults-only path.

The bottom line

Claude is 18+ because Anthropic built it for adults and chose not to add the filtering, the data protections, and the parental controls that a kids product needs. It is an honest line, not a scare label. The age check is barely a check at all, which means the real boundary is you.

Used with a parent, on a parent's account, for a clear task, Claude can be a genuinely useful study companion. Left to a child alone, it is simply outside what it was made for.
